Chapter Fourteen

L ogan looks at me, concerned, but I can’t form any words. My back leans against the wall and I fall to the ground. I put my head between my knees and remind myself to breathe. Now I’m the one who can’t hold tears back. I have waited my entire life to know that my mother accepts me no matter what. That she loves me and just wants me to be happy. I wipe my eyes on my sleeve, sniffling.

“What happened in there?” Logan gets to my level and reaches for my arm.

I want to tell him, but he’ll never understand. The mother I had was never the one he knew. I didn’t want to ruin his last few moments with her.

“I just can’t believe she’s so sick,” I lie.

“Oh.” He doesn’t believe me, but he also doesn’t push me further.

Before either of us can say another word, Pop is back with Ally and Elijah. Elijah runs over and almost knocks me over. Ally yells at him to be careful, but he just jumps excitedly in my arms. I casually wipe my eyes before anyone else sees.

Elijah runs in to watch Paw Patrol as Ally says goodbye. Logan and Pop walk back in the room, but I stay in the hallway. I can’t seem to bring myself to move or breathe. It’s like the weight of my reality has come crashing on my shoulders. Logan looks torn, but Elijah is his priority right now. It is probably better that way, at least he is keeping himself busy.

After a few dirty looks from passing nurses, I get up and make my way toward the elevators. I’ve always hated hospitals. They are somehow clean but also make me feel dirty when I leave. I push the button too many times, begging the elevator to come quicker. Suddenly, it is like I can’t get out of here fast enough. I don’t know where I’ll go. I don’t have keys or a car, not that I even know how to drive.

I take the elevator to the lobby and walk outside. I dial Colleen’s number but she sends me to voicemail. I call her again and again, but it’s the same nasally voice telling me to leave a message after the tone. I hang up and try again, at some point she’ll pick up her phone. I try for another ten minutes before giving up.

I have a few texts from Luna, checking in on me and asking to call when I get a chance. I call Colleen one last time before dialing Luna instead.

“Hello?” I can tell by the sleep in her voice that I just woke her up.

“Hey,” I choke out. Damn my voice for cracking on me when I needed to stay strong.

“Ri? Are you okay?” Luna perks up and I can hear the sheets ruffling.

“I’m sorry it’s so early. I—” My voice cracks.

“It’s okay, I’m here. What’s going on?” The comfort of my best friend causes me to breakdown in front of the hospital.
